In the city
The centre is flat, compact and walkable: you can cross it from the train station to the far end of the Sea Garden in under half an hour. Here is what is worth your time along the way.
The city's beloved seaside park, laid out in the 1910s on the cliff above the beach. Shaded alleys, the casino building, open-air stages, flower gardens and long sea views. Locals walk it every evening, and it stretches for around two kilometres above the shore.
Tip: Enter at the end of Bogoridi Street and walk north towards the Pantheon and the summer theatre.
A wooden pier reaching out into the bay from the beach below the Sea Garden. It is the classic spot for sunrise over the water and for watching cargo ships waiting their turn outside the port.
Tip: Come at first light for the calmest sea and almost no one else on the boards.
The pedestrian spine of the centre, running from the train station up to the Sea Garden. Cafés, ice cream, street musicians and restored late 19th-century facades from the town's merchant era.
Tip: The side streets north of Bogoridi hold most of the small restaurants and wine bars.
The main Orthodox church of Burgas, completed in 1907, with a richly painted interior, stained glass and a tall triple-nave hall. A short walk from Bogoridi Street.
Tip: Dress modestly and keep quiet during services; photography rules vary.
Four separate buildings cover archaeology, ethnography, history and natural history. The archaeology collection reflects thousands of years of Thracian and Greek settlement along this coast.
Tip: The Ethnographic Museum, in a beautiful 1873 house, is the most atmospheric of the four.
A wide sandy city beach right next to the centre, plus Magazia 1 in the redeveloped port area, where old warehouses now host exhibitions, concerts and events with the working harbour alongside.
Tip: The port promenade is the best place to watch ships come in with a coffee in hand.
Two landmarks inside the Sea Garden: a memorial to those who fell for the freedom of Burgas, and the 1930s casino building that now serves as a cultural centre with exhibitions and a café.
Tip: Check the noticeboard at the casino for free summer concerts and open-air film screenings.
An archaeological complex on the northern edge of the city built around mineral springs used since Thracian times and later by Roman emperors and Ottoman sultans, with a restored bath and visitor centre.
Tip: Reachable by city bus; combine it with a walk around the nearby Vaya Lake shore.
